San Francisco Elite Wrestling

About Us

Our History

Coach Vittorio (Vic) Anastasio  established the San Francisco Elite Wrestling Club  in 1988 and in 1989 merged with Coach John Contreras (JC).  Since 1994 it has been a registered 501(c)3 Non-Profit Corporation that is run 100% by volunteers.  The SF Elite Wrestling Club hosts a high school and kids wrestling team which competes in USA Wrestling Events and a Peninsula Wrestling League.

Shortly after Coach Steve Swanson started a wrestling team at Riordan High School in the late 1970’s he ran a wrestling club that was part of the  Peninsula Grapplers.  Vic Anastasio took over as the head wrestling coach at Riordan and in 1988 he established an independent wrestling club at Riordan which hosted students from different schools.  The club was initially called the Invaders and then in 1989, it merged with the Scholar Wrestling program.   In 1991 the team became affiliated with the now defunct National championship team the California JETS (Junior Elite Training Squads), and so the name San Francisco Elite Wrestling evolved from that alliance.

In 1994 the San Francisco Elite Wrestling club became a 501(c)3  Non-Profit Corporation.  Coach John Contreras is a co-founder and original board member.   JC has spent countless hours operating as a Head SF Elite coach for various age groups and adding girls wrestling to the program.  He has been the programs largest benefactor as his financial support was instrumental in expanding the matroom and establishing the club as the most successful kids and high school wrestling club in San Francisco History.

Purpose

SF Elite strives to further the growth of Amateur Wrestling in the San Francisco Bay Area.  To educate and instill in all athletes competing in wrestling activities a dedication to the ideals of sportsmanship, fair play, and fellowship.

The SF Elite Wrestling Association rents the mat room from Archbishop Riordan High School and provides secondary insurance through USA Wrestling membership.   The competitive team is mainly geared toward High School and Middle School wrestlers.

Starting in 2019 the San Francisco Elite Wrestling is expanding its’ mission with  Coach Gary Whitehouse, Zac Contreras and Vittorio Anastasio working together to launch Wrestle Live which is a national media educational resource that will help promote Amateur wrestling and help athletes to better maximize the positive effects from participating in the sport.
